BuddhaNature

 

Jaynes says “This exhibit is about using collage and painting to express the inherent BuddhaNature that resides in everything and all of us.  We all have the capacity to offer loving kindness and an open generous heart.“  Her collages are inspired by glimpses of the everyday and the ordinary.  Dark, rich  yet illuminating color is a signature element of her work.  Light is an important factor.  Jaynes makes mono-prints then adds images, real or imagined, obscure or quite obvious, text, photos or nature.  The work evolves into a semblance of balance and shape, often evoking the spiritual, dreamscapes and ancient symbols. 

The paintings of the Women of New Mexico are “some women I know and some I wish I had known.  The young women of the Sunset Series were found murdered and buried in the West Mesa of Albuquerque.  Outraged, she felt compelled to paint their portraits, keeping their spirits alive and connect to their remembrance.   “Art has revealed to me the miracle of BuddhaNature in everything and all of us.” 

 

Holly Aloha Jaynes is a local artist and member of Marblehead and Salem Art Associations, Lynn Arts & Art Salon of Marblehead. She is a graduate of Mass. College of Art & Design and has her Masters in Expressive Therapy from Lesley University.  She has been exhibiting and teaching classes in Boston and on the North Shore for more than 30 years.

“An Uncommon Common”

A lecture by Jim McAllister, Derby Square Tours

 

For the benefit of the victims of the recent 98 Washington Square fire.

 

Join Jim as he spins true tales of important (or just plain interesting) people, events, institutions and developments related to Salem’s elegant Washington Square neighborhood. Jim’s talk will cover everything from visits by sitting U.S. Presidents to architectural treasures to Walt Disney’s witch flick, “Hocus Pocus”.

 

This Sunday, April 3, at 11:45 a.m. (this is very short notice because folks need funds as soon as possible) at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 94 Washington Square East, Salem. Doors open at 11:15. No reservations needed.

 Admission is $10; all proceeds go the fire victims. Co-sponsored by the Salem Common Neighborhood Association and Derby Square Tours. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus Veragua Council No. 76 for donating the use of the hall.

Whether you are an experienced oil painter or someone who has never held a brush, come experiment and explore this relatively new medium that retains the buttery quality of oils. . . but mixes with water to give it fluidity and there's no smell! Students will work on their own subject matter with demos as needed by the instructor.  First night will be instructor guided.  If you don't have your own supplies, there is a materials fee of  $35 for the six weeks class. A supply list will be sent to you upon request. Painting is a great way to relax and forget about everything in these stressful times.  Hope you will join me. Space is limited so contact me ASAP.

Paint with North Shore artist and art educator, Paula Beaulieu M.Ed., in a watercolor workshop on Monhegan Island and experience the beauty and lushness of spring there. Spring comes late to the island so you'll have an opportunity to enjoy spring twice this year. The island, an hour by ferry from the mainland, explodes with color. Enticed by the salt air, everything seems to grow so much more luxuriantly, and numerous species of migrating birds make their annual stopovers.
