    Applications Currently Accepted for the 2010/2011 Artists' Professional Toolbox Program

    Application Deadline: September 24, 2010

    The Artist's Professional Toolbox (APT) is administered by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, a non-profit organization working to the strengthen the arts in our community.  Now in its sixth year, APT is an exciting career development program that empowers practicing visual artists with the skills and confidence they need to master the business challenges of being an artist. The Toolbox is an eight-month intensive course (14 two-hour classes) for a select group of artists to learn and practice marketing, networking, legal and business skills with the additional benefits of peer group interaction, mentorship, and feedback.

    The program includes instruction on:
    Clarifying career goals with a professional career coach
    Marketing strategies, including positioning, branding, social media, and marketing plan development 
    Writing artist statements, bios, press releases and media pitches
    Effective networking and "verbal branding"
    Effective negotiation
    Copyright infringement, contracts, and real estate issues
    Financial planning, and tax and estate planning
    Time management

    The program concludes with a portfolio review, giving participants the opportunity to practice their presentation skills and present their work to leading gallery owners, museum directors, grant makers, journalists, and residency program directors. Upon graduating from the program you will have the opporuninity to join a fellowship community of over 130 artists and have access to continuing education.

    Eligibility
    The Toolbox is open to practicing visual artists and is limited to 30 participants.
    Applicants must commit to completing the entire program and can not be a matriculated student enrolled in any degree program after July 1, 2010. 

    Tuition and Fees
    Tuition for artists is $825
    Payment plans are available, as well as a limited amount of financial aid. A financial aid application can be requested below. Financial aid applications are not made known to the panel of reviewers and in no way affect the applicant's prospects for admittance. Financial aid decisions are based on an applicant's income and other information.
    The Application Fee is $35
    To pay the application fee, simply make a "donation" in the amount of $35 on our Donation page.

    Dates
    Application Deadline is September 24th, 2010.
    Artists selected for the program will be notified on October 15th, 2010.
    The opening retreat will take place on Friday, October 29th and Saturday, October 30th 2010.
    The Toolbox program will conclude with a portfolio review on Saturday, May 7th, 2011. (Date subject to change)

    Karin Rosenthal Offering Photography Workshop

    Award-winning photographer Karin Rosenthal will be in Rocky Neck for a workshop on August 22-23. The workshop will consist of one afternoon of shooting around hidden tidepools in Eastern Point, where she will show you how to use light and shadow to achieve results similar to these photos. This imagery does not involve Photoshop and is achieved completely out of the camera. 

    Then on Sunday or Monday evening (depending on what works best for participants) she will hold a 2-3 hour review and critique where you will share your best photos through prints or on your laptop.

    The total cost for both days is $60 per person. This is an amazing
opportunity, as Karin's workshops usually cost about $600 per person. If you would like to sign up, please contact Judy Robinson-Cox (judy@robinson-cox.com) as soon as possible as space is limited to 10 people.

    Artist Studio Space Available in Salem

    There is currently an artist's studio available in a six family home on Park Street in Salem. The home is protected by a security system and the studio space is 1000 square feet, located in the basement, and was once used as a workshop. The owner requests that hallways be kept clear and clean, and that trash is taken out every Sunday night or before 7 am on Mondays.

    Picture currently unavailable, but the space is open for showings.

    Art Take-In Reminder: This Sunday/Monday and next Thursday!

    Ahht for Peeps  Aug 6-8 2010The Take-In for the Salem Art's Associations Photography show "Take Your Best Shot" is this Sunday, August 1st, 4-6pm and Monday, August 2nd, 6-7pm! And don't forget, the Artwork Take-In for "Ahht for Peeps" at Old Town Hall is this coming Thursday, August 5th during the Farmers' Market! You can visit the Calls for Art page to download the full Call and entry forms.  Sign up at either of the Take-Ins to help staff Old Town Hall during the three-day happening or the SAA Gallery during the month of August.
