Recent Work in Encaustic: An Exhibition of New Encaustic and Mixed Media Paintings by Artist Robin Luciano Beaty at the Kensington-Stobart Gallery in Salem.

July 16, 2008 through August 24, 2008 Kensington-Stobart Gallery in Salem, At the Hawthorne Hotel, On the Common, Salem, MA will present an exhibition of encaustic and mixed-media art by Robin Luciano Beaty. The exhibition, entitled Recent Work in Encaustic will feature new work along with selected pieces from her popular Wax and Wane collection and will open on Wednesday, July 16th, continuing through Sunday, August 24th, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, July 19th, from 5pm to 8pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

Robin Luciano Beaty is an award-winning painter from Byfield, Massachusetts. Three previous solo exhibitions, Travels in Watercolor, Translations and Wax and Wane were widely popular and well received.

Her most recent work introduces the ancient wax-based medium of Encaustic paint. Her use of wax, along with oil paint, found objects, vintage textiles, aluminum, copper, wire, glass, etc. all combine to create a compelling intersection of painting, sculpture and installation. "I begin not knowing where I am going to end, what I'm going to include or extract from the painting." The process in this series is the intuitive "journey" rather than the recording or reproduction of visual space. Wax and Wane represents the addition and subtraction of medium, the teetering between abstract and representational, the construction and destruction of a landscape or object in order to arrive at a new understanding of place. The act of scraping, tearing and burning layers of wax from the surface of the painting to reveal distinct compositions and texture is metaphor for digging into memory and uncovering familiar landscapes by deconstructing them to even further discovery. "I choose to render this visceral language in a medium that can be both understood and confusing. Just as one would feel walking down the corridors of a foreign market in a far away culture, making discoveries and unlearning misconceptions."

Kensington-Stobart Gallery at the Hawthorne Hotel, in historic Salem, Massachusetts, is a fine art gallery, specializing in the paintings of the country’s foremost maritime painter, John Stobart, and showcases 19th and 20th estate as well as contemporary art.
