Artists Offer Mementos of Celebration
Salem Arts Association Announces Companion Exhibit to the
Peabody Essex Museum’s Wedded Bliss, The Marriage of Art and
Ceremony
This July, the Salem Arts Association (SAA) will host
its primary annual juried show, and second annual Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)
companion exhibit, Mementos of Celebration at Old Town Hall. Following
the successful Ode to Cornell exhibit last year, the SAA will again
showcase contemporary work by local and national artists. The exhibit will
complement the PEM exhibit, Wedded Bliss, The Marriage of Art and
Ceremony, on display through September 14, 2008.
"As Wedded Bliss focuses on art inspired by the
celebration of weddings and matrimonial ceremonies around the world, the SAA
Mementos of Celebration exhibit will broaden the scope to celebrations of
all kinds," says SAA President, Gary LaParl. "The art is expected to reflect the
mementos that remind us of life’s important events."
Mementos of Celebration runs from July
12 through August 3, 2008 from 10 am - 4 pm at Old Town Hall, 32 Derby Square in
Salem, MA. The opening reception is Friday, July 11, 2008 from 7 - 9 pm. The
exhibit is free and open to the public.
Paula Bradstreet Richter, PEM's curator
of Textiles and Costumes, and Wedded Bliss exhibit, will serve as juror.
Ms. Richter will attend the opening reception on Friday, July 11, 2008 and
discuss creativity, art, and celebrations as they relate to the Wedded Bliss
and Mementos of Celebration exhibitions.
The SAA has extended a general call to artists for submissions
of artwork in all media. The deadline for consideration is Tuesday, July 8,
2008. For more information, go to: www.salemartsassociation.org
