Welcome Home: An Exhibit of Works by

Active Duty Servicemen & Women and Veterans

22 Foster Street, Peabody, MA

Show Dates: May 26 – July 8, 2011

Submission Deadline: May 7, 2011

Drop-off: May 20, 2011 from 10am-3pm

The opening reception for “Welcome Home” will be held Thursday May 26 from 5-8pm. The

exhibit will run from Friday May 27 through Friday July 8 at the ArcWorks Community Art Center.

ArcWorks Community Gallery. 10-1 Monday-Friday, and 5-8p Thursday evenings at 22 Foster

Street, Peabody, MA.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibit is open to all active duty servicemen and veterans. There is no entry

fee. The amount of space allocated to each artist will be based on available space.

REQUIREMENTS: All work must be original and created by the artist. Paintings, mixed-media,

sculpture, pottery, photography, printmaking and fine jewelry are eligible. Two dimensional work

must be suitably framed and firmly wired. No saw-tooth hangers or sandwich frames. Work may

be for sale. If we don't have enough room to display all work submitted, the hanging committee

will decide what will be hung.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Artists interested in exhibiting are to contact Suzanne Ryan via phone at

(978) 624-2318 or via Email: sryan@ne-arc.org. Artist are to submit either images of the work to

be exhibited or representative work to Suzanne Ryan via email or post care of the Northeast Arc,

6 Southside Road, Danvers, MA, 01923 or if the artist has a website a link to the site may be sent

in lieu of images.

All work will be accepted and will be hung as space allows. Entry forms will be forwarded once

the artist has contacted Suzanne Ryan. Entry forms, your bio or resumé, and/or statement of

work and a photo for inclusion in to our show book must be received no later than May 16, 2011.

Work must be delivered to ArcWorks Community Art Center on Friday, May 20, 10-3 PM or by

appointment.

FEES/COMMISSIONS: ArcWorks Community Art Center will keep 30% commission on all work

sold. The gallery will be open on Monday July 11 from 12-3 for pick up of unsold work.

BuddhaNature

Jaynes says “This exhibit is about using collage and painting to express the inherent BuddhaNature that resides in everything and all of us. We all have the capacity to offer loving kindness and an open generous heart.“ Her collages are inspired by glimpses of the everyday and the ordinary. Dark, rich yet illuminating color is a signature element of her work. Light is an important factor. Jaynes makes mono-prints then adds images, real or imagined, obscure or quite obvious, text, photos or nature. The work evolves into a semblance of balance and shape, often evoking the spiritual, dreamscapes and ancient symbols.

The paintings of the Women of New Mexico are “some women I know and some I wish I had known. The young women of the Sunset Series were found murdered and buried in the West Mesa of Albuquerque. Outraged, she felt compelled to paint their portraits, keeping their spirits alive and connect to their remembrance. “Art has revealed to me the miracle of BuddhaNature in everything and all of us.”

Holly Aloha Jaynes is a local artist and member of Marblehead and Salem Art Associations, Lynn Arts & Art Salon of Marblehead. She is a graduate of Mass. College of Art & Design and has her Masters in Expressive Therapy from Lesley University. She has been exhibiting and teaching classes in Boston and on the North Shore for more than 30 years.

Other media Jaynes uses are oil, watercolor, found object art, wearable art, decorative furniture and photography. “An Uncommon Common”

A lecture by Jim McAllister, Derby Square Tours

For the benefit of the victims of the recent 98 Washington Square fire.

Join Jim as he spins true tales of important (or just plain interesting) people, events, institutions and developments related to Salem’s elegant Washington Square neighborhood. Jim’s talk will cover everything from visits by sitting U.S. Presidents to architectural treasures to Walt Disney’s witch flick, “Hocus Pocus”.

This Sunday, April 3, at 11:45 a.m. (this is very short notice because folks need funds as soon as possible) at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 94 Washington Square East, Salem. Doors open at 11:15. No reservations needed.

Admission is $10; all proceeds go the fire victims. Co-sponsored by the Salem Common Neighborhood Association and Derby Square Tours. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus Veragua Council No. 76 for donating the use of the hall.

Whether you are an experienced oil painter or someone who has never held a brush, come experiment and explore this relatively new medium that retains the buttery quality of oils. . . but mixes with water to give it fluidity and there's no smell! Students will work on their own subject matter with demos as needed by the instructor. First night will be instructor guided. If you don't have your own supplies, there is a materials fee of $35 for the six weeks class. A supply list will be sent to you upon request. There will be tables for: RECYCLE, TRADE, SELL. There will also be some raffle items to benefit the Art Associations.

All items will get tagged by you when you arrive (we’ll have tags).

Each tag should have four things on it:

1. The three initials of your association: SAA, DAA, MAA, BAA

2. Your three initials, if you have no middle name use an “x”, example EXH

3. An item number for your records: #, example # 11

4. Price: example $5.00 (with 20% going to SAA/DAA if you are a member of either art group, if you are a member of another art association it will be 30% going to SAA/DAA).

There will be a cashier so you do not need to handle money and change. The
purchaser will give the cashier one tag and pay. This tag will be used to pay you. Please fill out a form when you come with your three initial code, your email, phone number, and snail mail address so we can mail you checks.

RECYCLE: These are items you don’t feel you need to earn money from, but if no one takes the items you need to take them back home with you.

TRADE: These are things you might be willing to trade with someone rather than exchange cash or buy something (for the budget conscious).

SELL: Art related materials that you haven’t used, are in reasonable condition, and you’d like to get some return on them. You’re also willing to give SAA/DAA 20% of what you charge.

This is a first time collaboration for us. Invite your friends, no door fee (donations excepted).

The Salem Arts Festival promotes the arts in downtown Salem through a collaborative festival for residents and visitors providing opportunities to highlight the existing artist community and encourage general community participation in the arts. The 2010 festival had over 4,000 visitors. The Festival is looking for art and performance for the sophisticated art patron as well as for the art novice including interactive events for children. It will engage participants of diverse backgrounds and ages by reaching out to current art patrons, local students, and the community at large.

Montserrat College of Art invites the Art Associations of the North Shore area to a reception: Thursday, February 17, 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Members will have an opportunity to mingle, explore the college, and take in informative demonstrations by Montserrat’s Gallery staff. Leonie Bradbury, Director and Curator of Montserrat's Gallery and Visiting Artist Program, and Maggie Cavallo, Outreach Coordinator, will provide a brief overview of our current Exhibition: A Debt to Pleasure. Lucas Spivey, Exhibition Manager, will offer tips on how to install an exhibit.

In addition, door prizes will be awarded: a $300 Gift Certificate toward a Continuing Education Course, two tickets to our annual Art Auction and three portfolio reviews by Judy Brown, Montserrat Professor, Painting & Drawing, Co-Chair Foundation. Beyond their flawlessly rendered surfaces, the painting in A Debt to Pleasure integrates the sensual and the sinister, the vulgar and the mysterious. Each artist explicitly references stylistic techniques and aesthetics of the past to create a provocative body of work that explores meaning making in painting. In a decidedly postmodern manifestation, allegorical realism is employed to investigate symbolism in the contemporary dissemination of cultural history and the continued obsession with 'everything new'.

JUDGE: Irvin M. Lippman, Executive Director, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.

Irvin took the helm of the Museum in 2003 and oversaw the merger into Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2008. Over the last seven years, the Museum has achieved unprecedented success with exhibitions that have made the Museum the most attended art museum in South Florida. In addition to bringing extraordinary exhibitions such as the now infamous Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs and the upcoming Vatican Splendors (January 2011) and Offering of the Angels: Paintings and Tapestries from the Uffizi (November 2011), the Museum has developed a national reputation for its own collections that have been brought together since the Museum’s founding in 1958. The Museum’s Studio School, which was inaugurated in 2004, has become a major part of the educational program; and there are plans underway to expand the School in a renovated 14,000 sq ft building enabling it to offer a larger curriculum -- ceramics, sculpture, photography, graphic design -- with the goal of serving over 2500 students annually by 2014. A major renovation has recently been completed of the Museum’s Plaza which will literally extend the cultural life of the Museum and NSU into the City.

Exhibition - The 45 selected artists will participate in a collective exhibition at the Artists’ Haven Gallery. The exhibition will be from May 10th through May 31st, 2011.

Opening Reception - A Meet the Artists & Awards Presentation event will be held on the evening of Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 6 - 9pm. Free and public invited.

Judging - Judging will be based on creativity, skill, technique, and artistic attributes.

Awards - From the overall entries, 45 artists will be selected (5 artists in each of the 9 categories). Of those, 9 artists will win a Best of Category Award (1 artist from each category). And of those, there will be a 1st Place Best of Show Award winner, 2nd Place Judges Award winner, and a 3rd Place Merit Award winner.

Categories: Entrants must choose from 9 categories. Multiple entries can be made in as many categories as desired - see below for Entry Fees and Form. Artists working in various mediums are welcome to enter. If you feels yours is questionable, please contact us.

Size limitation: there are no size limitations for this show, except entry through a standard door.

Conditions: Curating will be done from actual work. All work must be delivered and picked up. All work must be original, ready for hanging or display and have been completed in the past 3 years. No wall anchors. Heavy work and work requiring special installation must be installed by the artist. Work previously exhibited in this gallery will not be accepted. LynnArts takes pride in your work: we will not accept broken or damaged work/frames. Entries are invited from all artists over age 17.

Drop-off: Saturday, January 8, 11am-4pm, Thursday, January 13, 10am-8pm, Friday, January 14, 10am-5pm at 25 Exchange Street, Lynn, MA. Please fill out the following information for each piece and attach to the back of your work: number of pieces submitted, artists name, address, daytime phone number, email address, title of piece, medium and price. Commission: LynnArts, Inc. retains a 25% commission on all work sold during the show.

Liability: Artwork will be insured upon arrival at LynnArts. We reserve the right not to insure works that are damaged or structurally unsound. Works left at LynnArts beyond the stated pick-up date are not insured and will be charged a $5 per day/per piece fee.

The Juror: Stephanie Walker, owner of Walker Contemporary on Harrison Avenue in the South End, has over ten years of experience as a contemporary art dealer. Walker began her career at a gallery specializing in 19^th & 20^th century American impressionist work and then became the Director of a contemporary art gallery on Newbury Street, where she remained for more than eight years. Walker also spent a year living in Los Angeles; traveling all over the country to fairs, galleries and artists’ studios, a pivotal opportunity that only solidified and deepened her passion for working with contemporary art and artists. Walker is deeply committed to the advancement of outstanding contemporary art through the promotion of dedicated, innovative and passionate, emerging, mid-career and established artists.

LynnArts, Inc. is a private non-profit arts organization located in Lynn’s Central Square at 25 Exchange Street. The building houses two large and airy gallery spaces as well as a black-box rehearsal/performance space and several artist studios. The LynnArts office welcomes queries regarding artist exhibition proposals, membership, teaching opportunities, and rental of office and studio space.
